Pack Rats

For many reasons, I have taken up walking.  First & foremost I need the exercise,  and since I have a phobia of skinny women in spandex I refuse to go to the gym.  So, I walk.  It clears my head, gives me some much needed time alone & lets me watch birds–all at the same time.  Sounds like a good deal to me.

A couple of days ago I saw something that has really made an impression on me.  Pack rat nests!!!!   I know, I know, it doesn’t sound very enlightening, or even educational, but, I will admit that it could get very exciting! I walk along trails that circle a small lake, or sometimes just sit & watch birds.  As I was walking I noticed quite a few packrat nests & decided that the next time I walked back there I would at least carry a walking stick.  From the looks of the tracks, the nests, & their entrance holes these are NOT cute little fuzzy critters, but giant pterodactyl rodents!   R.O.U.S.’s Rodents of Unusual Size

Packrats build their nests out of anything that they can find.  Sticks, leaves, or anything shiny!  One particular nest had bones & feathers integrated into it, & for some strange reason it resonated with me.  It got me to thinking about my life, & made me wonder how often I had  “built my house” with things that were dead, & if my house had the lingering smell of death to it?  Too often I hold onto things that should be dead to me & let go of the more important things that pertain to life.  I guess I need to make more of a conscious effort to put off the grave clothes & live!!!!!

  1. Great post! I was googling for Pack Rats and came across your blog. I live in the desert and have pack rats all around…your comparisons to our dwellings vs. the pack rat’s were spot on.
