Skills

My husband & I own a machine shop.  My husband is the machinist & we employ several welders.  I work in the office, but Thursday I worked in the shop.  My husband needed help marking holes on metal.  Not very technical stuff, & not a very skilled task.  I was just a warm body to fill the position.  hehe   It was kind of fun, & it got me to thinking about some of the crazy skills that I have acquired in my lifetime.  I thought that it would be fun to ask you, dear readers, to list some of your crazy skills.

So, I will go first.  I’m anxious to hear some of the most unusual or funny skills that you have.

  • For Christmas I made a wildlife scene out of metal with a plasma torch for my dad.
  • I know how to throw a tomahawk. Really.
  • I can milk a goat.
  • I have butchered rabbits (to eat) on many occasions.
  • I can shoot (and own) blackpowder guns.
  • I carry a pocketknife–everyday, although I cannot sharpen it.  It is a skill that escapes me.
  • I have made adobes & the mud used for mortar in between them.
  • Concrete……I’ve mixed loads & loads of concrete.
  • One of my favorite things to do is to hunt for arrowheads.
  • I can do quilling.  It is the art of making tiny flowers out of paper strips.

My dad has lived the kind of life that I want to live.  He gave me some of the greatest advice I’ve ever received.  “Find out what you love to do & then figure out how to get paid to do it.”  His life has been an adventure.  He was a cowboy.  Then a game warden.  He worked deer hunts & antelope traps.  He managed a game preserve for Bighorn Sheep, & has spent his life learning.  When I grow up I want to be him.  I want to live the “Great Adventure” of life & , as he says, “having been found faithful, give me a home with Thee”.  Life is meant to be spent in awe of the beauty around us.  Ever learning.  Always thankful, & faithfully walking with the Lord.

When I come to the end of my life I want to be able to say that I have had fun.  That I have been faithful to Jesus & to the calling He has placed on my life.  That I have done some crazy & unusual things.  That I have loved Him & people wholeheartedly.

Snow & Other Stuff

Winter has dawned in the Texas Panhandle.  We’ve received 10 glorious inches of the wonderful stuff!  I know that to some that’s not much, but to us here in the “great southwest” we love moisture in whatever form it takes!  Actually, this is the first real winter that we’ve had in several years.  For the last three winters the drought has robbed us of much moisture of any kind.

I love living in Texas!  My son & I started shoveling the drive this morning & our neighbor came over with his snow blower & finished the job for us.

We’re enjoying the weather, my son is curled up on the couch watching Henry V.  (If you’ve never seen it it is wonderful!)  I am enjoying a bit of green tea while I surf & the hubby has gone to the store for hot chocolate.

My daughters are spread out all over the countryside.  Ky (the middle girl) is in Houston for an academic decathalon.  She’s had fun & gotten to ride an airplane for the first time.  Cyn is in Florida soaking up the sun.  I talked to her a couple of days ago & it was almost 80 degrees!  I would enjoy some sunshine, but I love living in Texas!!!!!

I have just purchased Beth Moore’s new book “David”.  I can hardly wait to dig into it.  I have read a few other of her books, but have never done one of her Bible studies.  I’ll keep you posted.

Today is the Day

Today is Monday.  Today is January 8, 2007.  Today is an important day.                    Today is the day that my life changed.

I won’t go into alot of details, but the Lord is making changes in me….and I’m excited!  Physical changes, changes in ministry, changes in my spiritual life!  I’m so thankful & so amazed at His faithfulness!

Psalm 118:24  This is the day that the Lord has made.   We will rejoice & be glad in it.

Hello!

After a ten day Christmas break I am at home again & have access to a computer.  Whew!  I thought that I was going to go into withdrawals without a computer, but I survived & am ok!

I had a very eventful break.  My oldest daughter came home for Christmas!  She’s changed & grown, but it was a big treat to see her.  I miss her more than I ever thought possible, but I’m excited for her & the adventure that she is having.

I caught a nasty cold & was hoarse & coughed all over two states!!!!!   Grrrr   I am fully recovered, and am very thankful!

I got to speak at the Christmas banquet at my church.  Woohoo!  I was so excited, but that darn cold made it difficult.  By the time I was finished I was hoarse & afraid that my voice was such a huge distraction that no one heard what the Lord laid on my heart.  I wanted to do well enough that they would ask me again sometime.  We’ll see about that! hehe

We took the family to the hubby’s parents the weekend before Christmas & had a good visit.  My mother-in-law is recovering from breast cancer, so things were pretty laid back.   I didn’t get to see all of my nieces & nephews (one is in Iraq & several more were still in Kansas) but they’re all growing & turning into pretty nice people.  I did get to see my new great-niece Kinsley, & she’s a beautiful baby!  Nice job Kendall & Chris!!!!!

The next weekend we went to my parents home.  We spread out our celebration over three days & it was nice.  We did stockings on one day, went to church together the next day & opened gifts.  Then on Christmas day had a big meal.    I kind of liked it that way.  There was no pressure & it was a whole lot more relaxed.

The next weekend was a family reunion of my mom’s extended family.  We had a huge snow storm so it really cut down on the people that attended, but we had a great time anyway.  We laughed & giggled alot, ate more than we should, & didn’t take one picture!?  I wish we would have thought of pictures, but I guess we were having too much fun to slow down.

In the middle of all of this the pastor of my mom’s church asked me to do a concert at his church!  woohoo!  I was so excited, I’ve been praying & asking God to open doors for me to sing.  I’ve never done a concert by myself before so it was also kind of nerve wracking.  Could I sing for an hour?  (Especially since I’d had a cold for two weeks & was coughing all of the time & fighting with my asthma.)  Would I be received well?  Would I have anything relevant to say?  Anything that would affect people’s lives?   Let me tell you, God was faithful!  He met with us & gave me the voice to sing.  He made the singing easy & I had the breath & didn’t cough once!!!!   Wow!  He even gave me the words to say!  He helped me to give my testimony in a way that seemed to affect people.   I am so thankful!  So humbled, & so honored that He would allow me to lift up the name of Jesus!

Well, more later.  Blessings to all!
