The Lord of the Rings

Since I am the last person on the planet who has not read the Lord of the Rings Trilogy I have decided to bow to pressure & submit.  Today I marched myself down to the library & checked The Fellowship of the Ring out.  It looks oddly similar to books I used to read in junior high that had the funny cover & the hard back.  I have read a couple of pages & found it to be very entertaining.  I think that I could have been a Hobbit.  I see a whole lot of similarities (except for the foot thing–no hair there.)

  1. Anything that a Hobbit has no immediate use for, but is unwilling to throw away is called a mathom.  Their dwellings were apt to become rather crowded with mathoms.  They re-gift.
  2. They eat & drink often & heartily. Six meals a day!
  3. They love parties & simple jests….(I love a good pun!)

Kind of eerie isn't it?

I’m So Thankful!

This morning I woke up thinking about what I am thankful for……It’s funny how we are sometimes more receptive to that gentle God-breeze when we are half asleep.  I love that time when we are in the “twilight” between sleep & awake–anyway, here is my rant for the day.   These are not in any particular order.

 I am thankful for:

  • my sweet Bear (he really is a gift)
  • the fact that Barry will help Austin with his Math
  • my cute little house
  • Cynthia & the big dreams that she has
  • Ky & the strong streak in her
  • Austin & man he is becoming.  The way that he takes care of me when we are together & the fineness I see in his heart.
  • My strong spiritual heritage.  Thank you Lord for my family & my roots.
  • Blessings Book Club & the way they let me disagree without judging me
  • my Bibles
  • my church
  • my computer with DSL & 2 monitors
  • my cell phone (what did we do before cell phones?)
  • Jesus…..Jesus….Jesus
  • my binoculars & bird book
  • my camera with the great zoom lens

Birthdays

Time heals all wounds and wounds all heels.

Today I shall wax eloquent on the subject of time.

My life is rushing along at a speed that I no longer find comfortable.  I find that I have less time ahead of me than what is behind.  It frightens & yet exhilarates me. I find myself wondering how it got away so quickly, & if I will accomplish all of the things that I dreamt of doing when I was young.  The question is….are these things important to anyone other than myself??????   Probably not.  I guess I need to spend a little more time delighting myself in the Lord & let Him give me the desires of my heart.  To put the desires that need to be there in there.

I think that birthdays were designed to make us take stock.  To give us a marker that we can look back on.  My dad turned 70 last week, & he told me that inside he still feels like he is 24.  I hope that I always feel 24 on the inside.  Not old & wrinkled in my heart.  Is this what Jesus promised us?  Life……Life….and more abundantly!!!!! Not old & tired, but alive & vibrant in Him.  I think so.

I know that there is an eye that watches all of us. There is a judgment that weighs everything we do. And before this great force, which is greater than any government, I stand in awe and I kneel in respect. And it is to this great judgment that I dedicate this next song.”

Pack Rats

For many reasons, I have taken up walking.  First & foremost I need the exercise,  and since I have a phobia of skinny women in spandex I refuse to go to the gym.  So, I walk.  It clears my head, gives me some much needed time alone & lets me watch birds–all at the same time.  Sounds like a good deal to me.

A couple of days ago I saw something that has really made an impression on me.  Pack rat nests!!!!   I know, I know, it doesn’t sound very enlightening, or even educational, but, I will admit that it could get very exciting! I walk along trails that circle a small lake, or sometimes just sit & watch birds.  As I was walking I noticed quite a few packrat nests & decided that the next time I walked back there I would at least carry a walking stick.  From the looks of the tracks, the nests, & their entrance holes these are NOT cute little fuzzy critters, but giant pterodactyl rodents!   R.O.U.S.’s Rodents of Unusual Size

Packrats build their nests out of anything that they can find.  Sticks, leaves, or anything shiny!  One particular nest had bones & feathers integrated into it, & for some strange reason it resonated with me.  It got me to thinking about my life, & made me wonder how often I had  ”built my house” with things that were dead, & if my house had the lingering smell of death to it?  Too often I hold onto things that should be dead to me & let go of the more important things that pertain to life.  I guess I need to make more of a conscious effort to put off the grave clothes & live!!!!!
